Time for a Cleaner Cloud

Cloud Cleanup Month at Luminis

Cloud computing has transformed the way we work — enabling flexibility, scalability, and collaboration like never before. But behind the convenience lies a growing challenge: digital clutter.

From outdated backups and forgotten test environments to idle services and duplicate data, we’re storing far more in the cloud than we realize. This isn’t just a matter of cost — it’s an environmental issue, a complexity issue, and ultimately, a sustainability issue.

That’s why we’re launching Cloud Cleanup Month this June at Luminis: a month dedicated to raising awareness around cloud waste and taking practical steps toward smarter, cleaner, and more future-proof IT infrastructure.

White Paper Green Computing

Green computing, the practice of designing and managing IT systems sustainably, has become critical as energy demands from the digital sector rise exponentially.

Computing already accounts for nearly 10% of global electricity consumption, reaching 30% within the coming decades.
Without immediate action, the growing strain on global energy resources may hinder technological progress and exacerbate climate change.

Cloud Cleanup - Make Your Cloud Cleaner and Greener

The Cloud Cleanup is a tool developed by Luminis to help organizations map the carbon footprint of their IT landscape — and take targeted action to reduce it.

By analyzing infrastructure usage, server loads, and cloud configurations, the tool identifies inefficiencies that lead to unnecessary energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. It then offers concrete, vendor-specific suggestions (e.g. using AWS or Azure tools) to optimize usage and reduce environmental impact.

Why it matters

Cloud Cleanup in the News

Cloud waste isn’t just a technical oversight — it’s a growing environmental and financial issue. As cloud adoption continues to skyrocket, so does the volume of data we store: outdated logs, redundant backups, unused virtual machines, zombie resources… all quietly piling up in data centers across the world.

These data centers, while essential, consume massive amounts of electricity — not only to power storage and compute, but also to cool the physical hardware. According to recent studies, the ICT sector (including cloud computing) is already responsible for 2–4% of global CO₂ emissions, and that figure is only expected to rise.

The goal over the Cloud Cleanup month? To help all of us make more conscious, efficient, and sustainable decisions when it comes to storing and managing data in the cloud.

See our tips for your own clean cloud storage

Tip 1: Clear out your mailbox
  • Go to your “Deleted Items” or “Trash” folder.
  • Note how many emails are currently in there.
  • Want to know how much storage space this folder is taking up? Right-click on the folder and choose ‘Properties’ or ‘Folder Size’.
  • Ready to clean up? Choose ‘Empty Trash’ and confirm with ‘Delete Permanently’.
Tip 2: Organize your files
  • Organize smart: Sort files by date, project or type.
  • Check usefulness: Open files and determine if you really need them.
  • Pay attention to rules: Keep in mind retention periods and AVG.
  • Delete or move: Discard unnecessary files or put them in a cleanup folder.
