Challenge

A federated data platform for safe data sharing

The Dutch Metropolitan Innovations (DMI) ecosystem is a public-private cooperation: market parties, knowledge institutes, G40 and G4 municipalities, provinces and Dutch ministries of Infrastructure and Water Management and that of the Interior and Kingdom Relations work together under a joint, uniform System of Agreements to facilitate the responsible sharing and use of data. The DMI ecosystem is co-sponsored by the National Growth Fund.

Luminis is part of the DMI ecosystem and, in collaboration with partners Equinix, Dexes and DELL, uses the federated data platform InformationGrid (Informationgrid.com) to create a dataspace infrastructure for the DMI ecosystem. Using this dataspace infrastructure the DMI ecosystem can create dataspaces that allow organizations to share their data in a trusted and secure way.

Solution

Stay in control of your data with DataStations®

The dataspaces of the DMI ecosystem have a transactional nature that not only allows organizations to monetize their published data, but also to log all transactions for later auditing purposes. Access and usage of published data is based on an elaborate set of policies, through which a high-level of trust and security is guaranteed.

To enable easy integration and transparency, the dataspaces of the DMI ecosystem also adhere to the relevant standards of the International Dataspaces Organization (IDSA). And, by combining these standards with the model-centric nature of our InformationGrid data platform (Informationgrid.com) our solution introduces the concept of DataStations®. DataStations® allow organizations to capture both the structure as well as the privacy-sensitivity and other constraints.
Furthermore, DataStations® allow organizations to keep track of the lineage and provenance of data by which it is possible to track which data is requested, accessed visited and, if necessary, allows you to block transactions. This provides absolute control of your own data.

Results

Data-driven innovations for modern urbanization

Using dataspaces, the participants of the DMI ecosystem, municipalities, provinces and ministries can share data while safe-guarding data sovereignty, data privacy, and data security. And, the underlying federated data platform also allows organizations to aggregate data and apply advanced federated AI algorithms.

Effectively, the dataspaces of the DMI ecosystem allows organizations to monitor data regarding the traffic in cities, pinpoint busy areas or track popular biking routes. And building on the extensible nature of the federated data platform, the DMI ecosystem can pursue its goal of applying data-driven innovations to solve the challenges that are related to modern urbanization like sustainability, smart mobility and housing.
