It’s been a while since I wrote my last soundbyte, so it’s a good time to reflect on and talk about an exciting live event coming up this evening. As usual, I will start by introducing the song I picked, which comes from the movie 8 mile and reflects the unique opportunity offered to a group of 20 simracers tonight. They have one shot at this…
A year ago we started a partnership with Image Space Inc. and took over the development, marketing and sales of the rFactor 2 racing simulation. It’s been quite a ride so far. We’ve more than doubled the user base, introduced big upgrades in our graphics engine, bigger licenses and paid content. Our roadmap for the upcoming years is looking really good. Studio 397 has grown considerably as well. We’ve managed to attract some seriously talented people. In a few weeks time we will be back at the SimRacing Expo at the Nürburgring. There we’ll preview some of the latest developments for rFactor 2.
Recently, we’ve also teamed up with McLaren and IDEAS+CARS, the people behind the Nissan GT Academy, to host a round in their competition, featuring the McLaren 650S GT3 racing car.
World’s Fastest Gamer
McLaren is looking for the “World’s Fastest Gamer”. A total of 10 finalists are put through a series of tests to see if they’ve got what it takes to become McLaren’s Formula 1 simulator driver. Over the course of several days they will be tested by McLaren’s engineers and professionals for general health and fitness, reaction speed, engineering know-how, car set-up ability, PR skills, and aptitude. They will be trained and re-tested regularly and given multiple opportunities to drive on various virtual platforms including a professional simulator. The final decision of the McLaren management team will be based on the observations gained during the whole final event, supplemented by times and data gathered from each competitor. The winner gets offered a job at McLaren.
Six out of ten finalists are pre-selected by a panel of motorsport and simracing experts. The remaining four spots will go to the winners of four on-line competitions using a variety of different racing simulations. rFactor 2 is chosen as one of those racing simulations, representing the high-end simulation genre.
Over the course of the last month, in four intense rounds of qualification and racing, a total of 20 drivers have earned a spot in the final race. With races at the different layouts of Silverstone (round one and three) and Zandvoort (round two), this evening’s race at Silverstone National will be broadcast on YouTube and Facebook Live.
Winner takes it all!
In the upcoming months we’ll start looking ahead at 2018. The last couple of years have seen a huge increase in interest around eSports and rFactor 2 has a lot of very compelling features that make it the ideal platform for such competitions and events. Last year we’ve already hosted the biggest event in eSports simracing with the Visa Vegas Formula E event, which featured a one million dollar prize pot. We’re confident that next year we’ll see more events and an increased collaboration between racing series, car and hardware manufacturers and many other brands. As simracing is getting closer to the real thing, it is also becoming an essential training tool for anybody that wants a career in racing. At Luminis we are in a unique position, owning products in both the simracing and personal education markets.
The final race at Silverstone National can be followed live below.
I wish everybody a nice evening and a great week!
