Less than a week ago, the finals for McLaren’s World’s Fastest Gamer were decided. It was the end of 10 exciting days at their headquarters that saw a group of 12 simracers being reduced to 6, 3, then 2, to finally announce Rudy van Buren as the overall winner. And yes, Rudy is also the guy who won the rFactor 2 leg of the competition, which shows how good our simulation is! Incidentally, the top 3 were all Dutch drivers, with Freek Schothorst coming second and the winner of the grand prize at Las Vegas earlier this year, Bono Huis, completing the top 3. In fact, another thing worth noting is that our colleague at Studio 397, Greger Huttu, also competed and actually made it into the top 6 before being eliminated. Needless to say Rudy’s life will change considerably as he moves to Woking and is being interviewed by TV, radio and internet media constantly this week.

And we are already looking ahead. The Formula 1 season just ended and next week season 4 of Formula E will kick off with a double header in the streets of Hong Kong on the 2nd and 3rd of December. In a few days we will release the Formula E Energize Pack for rFactor 2, featuring all the teams of the 2018 season as well as the Hong Kong track. We have partnered with the Formula E organization to ensure the cars and track are as accurate as possible, and we have a license for Formula E for the next three years! It’s very exciting to be part of one of the fastest growing series and we are also the first simulation to feature these electric cars. In terms of racing, they bring a few new things to the table. Most importantly the need to conserve energy and regenerate it while braking. Managing your energy budget whilst still trying to overtake competitors and win the race is a very interesting challenge and a new skill to learn for all (sim)racers!
Like all the cores of Luminis we are wrapping up our plans and budgets for 2018. That includes designing a product roadmap for the next couple of years. But that’s not the only reason why we’re extremely busy, as the Steam Winter Sale is coming up and for us that’s a great opportunity to end the year on a high! Without letting the cat out of the box just now we are planning a couple of new features specifically for that sale.
And if you’ve been wondering what music you have been listening to while reading this soundbyte? That’s the EJ playing some official Formula E music. Have a great week all!
