Information Grid

Information Grid: supporting evolution of information

The unprecedented and growing amount of data available today offers both opportunities and challenges. The opportunities lie in the ability to apply advanced analytical techniques e.g. to uncover new correlations, trends and patterns. The challenges range from the methods and costs for storage and retrieval, the time required to merge real-time and static data, combining multiple and evolving data sources to enforcing and auditing data quality.

The Information Grid was developed to address a number of repeating challenges we have faced over years of designing large-scale systems that feature a range of statistical functionality:

  • How to design an information storage/retrieval strategy that can evolve while minimising the impact of such evolution on application architecture e.g. by imposing a single type of database or needing applications to be aware of multiple data sources?
  • How to support the evolution of information schemas over time?
  • How to ensure that applications can be architected and designed without the need to consider data access management and audit requirements?
  • How to ensure security and access control at data-level?

Luminis’ Information Grid addresses these issues with its polyglot storage architecture, which supports a wide range of information-centric features, including schema evolution, auditing and provenance control. It also supports data “time travelling” as illustrated by this application, which shows how the Information Grid can visualise student performance over time.
